Vince Li has been found not criminally responsible for the unprovoked killing and beheading of fellow passenger Timothy McLean on a Greyhound bus last summer.

Manitoba Court of Queen’s Bench Judge John Scurfield said Thursday that Li, 40, could not be found guilty of murder and is not criminally responsible for the crime because he was mentally ill at the time of the killing.

“These grotesque acts are appalling… but are suggestive of a mental disorder,” the judge said.

“He did not appreciate the act he committed was wrong.”

What?!  So as long as you act like you don’t APPRECIATE that what you’re doing is wrong, then you’re not guilty???  Murderers, go do your thing in Canada!  It’s open season!  Start hacking up and eating whatever innocent victims you want!  The worst that will happen is a “yearly assessment!”  Great deal for brutal murderers and cannibals!

Li had pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-degree murder. Psychiatric evidence at his trial suggested he is a schizophrenic who suffered a major psychotic episode last July 30 when he fatally stabbed McLean, 22, ate some of the body parts, and cut off McLean’s head.

For five hours after the killing, Li wandered around on the bus, defiling the body while an RCMP tactical team waited to subdue him.

Rather than go to prison, Li will be kept in a secure psychiatric facility, most likely in Selkirk, Man.

- At approximately 8:30 pm on Wednesday, 30 July 2008, Li began to repeatedly stab Tim McLean, for no apparent reason.

- Tim McLean struggled and tried to escape, as evidenced by a number of defensive wounds.

- Li came to the front of the bus and tried to exit. The bus driver was able to close the door on Mr. Li’s arm, with the bloody knife extended outside of the bus.

- Mr. Scyrup, another Greyhound driver who pulled over to help, realized that Li was severing the head of Tim McLean. Scyrup got off the bus, as he realized that Tim McLean was dead and could not be helped.

- Li went to the front of the bus, holding the severed head of Tim McLean in one hand and a black-handled knife in the other hand. He motioned that he wished to be let off the bus.

- Li threw the head of Tim McLean into the stairwell and then returned to the back of the bus and continued to mutilate the body of Tim McLean with a buck knife and a pair of scissors.

- Li appeared to smell, and then eat parts of Tim McLean’s flesh. He also appeared to lick blood from his fingers and hands. Mr. Li continued to carry Tim McLean’s internal organs and various body parts throughout the bus, later returning to bag them in white plastic garbage bags. He also carried the head of Tim McLean from time to time.

- After arrest, found in Li’s pants pocket was a plastic bag containing Tim McLean’s ear, nose, and tongue.

- A variety of Tim McLean’s body parts and organs were found throughout the bus.

- The tip of the knife blade was located in the skull of Tim McLean in the forehead area just above the inner aspect of the right eyebrow.

- The autopsy reveals that the cause of death of Tim McLean was multiple stab wounds.

- The body of Tim McLean showed evidence of damage in excess of 100 areas, ranging from abrasions to a large gaping wound of the chest.

- The eyes were missing and not recovered.

- The internal organs were recovered, in plastic bags, in 4 separate areas of the bus.

- Dr. Littman, the pathologist, estimates that one third of the heart of Tim McLean was never recovered and it is presumed that Mr. Li ate it.

- Tim McLean’s eyes were never recovered, and are presumed to have been eaten also.

Li denies eating the flesh of Tim McLean.

Carol deDelley, Tim’s mother, said, “The laws are grossly inadequate in circumstances like this. NCR (not criminally responsible) may have its place or may be correct in some circumstances. I don’t think so, not in this one. And now every year we will have to undergo a review to ensure the public is safe from Mr. Li.”

Justice John Scurfield will deliver his verdict this morning. Scurfield said he would review medical reports in the case before issuing his verdict.

“Hopefully (I can) express it in a way that is understandable to Mr. McLean’s family, Mr. Li and the public in general.”

It would really have been impressive if that oh-so-brave and patriotic journalist had thrown his shoes at Saddam Hussein back when he was still in power. After that journalist had been tortured for a few weeks, he’d probably have been strapped in a chair gnashing his teeth (if he had any left) and digging his fingernails (if he had any left) into the arms of the chair as he watched Saddam’s goons torture and execute every member of his family (not to mention the raping of the female family members). Then they’d have taken his beaten and broken body and tossed him while still alive into one of their favorite toys: the industrial plastic shredder!

Arson Auspected in Fire at Palin’s Church

WASILLA – An overnight fire at Gov. Sarah Palin’s church caused an estimated $1 million in damage, and investigators say it could be the work of an arsonist.  Firefighters were called to Wasilla Bible Church about 9:40 p.m. Friday and found flames and smoke coming out windows at the back of the three-story structure, said James Steele, chief of the Central Mat-Su Fire Department.

Five women were inside the church working on crafts, and possibly two children, but everyone escaped unharmed after a fire alarm alerted them to trouble, Steele said.

It was a major fire, the biggest the department has seen this year, and Steele said volunteer firefighters from across the region came to fight the blaze. As many as 35 to 40 people responded, he said.

Firefighters had to tear open wall spaces in the metal building to snuff out hotspots and were on the scene until after 5 a.m. today, Steele said.

“We are definitely treating it as suspicious and as potential arson at this point,” he said.

Steele declined to provide details on why investigators believe the fire might have been set deliberately, or whether accelerants were found on the scene.

The building is worth between $4 million and $5 million, and sustained an estimated $1 million in damage, he said.

A task force has been formed to investigate including people from the state fire marshal’s office, the Central Mat-Su Fire Department, the Wasilla Police Department and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The Anchorage Fire Department also sent out an investigator.

The church, located off the Parks Highway on the north end of town, is one of the biggest in the Valley with a typical Sunday service drawing up to 1,000 people. Several well-known Valley residents attend the church, including Palin and state Rep. Wes Keller, R-Wasilla.

Palin’s office issued this statement today:

“Gov. Palin stopped by the church this morning, and she told an assistant pastor that she apologizes if the incident is in any way connected to the undeserved negative attention the church has received since she became a vice presidential candidate on Aug. 29. Whatever the motives of the arsonist, the governor has faith in the scriptural passage that what was intended for evil will in some way be used for good.”

Bill McAllister, the governor’s media spokesman, said he wasn’t sure when Palin last attended the church. He said she would not attend services tomorrow morning because she’s traveling to Juneau to release next year’s state budget. But the governor’s children do plan to go to church, he said.

The church’s Web site says the congregation will meet at 11:15 a.m. Sunday at Wasilla Middle School.

Church Pastor Larry Kroon, reached at home Saturday morning, said he’d been up all night and was still in a state of disbelief.

He said the church was in only its second winter in the building, and he confirmed the $1 million damage estimate.

“It’s one of those things – it feels surreal,” he said.

The pastor said he was especially disturbed someone would set the fire while people were inside.

He said he had talked to fire officials, but didn’t know of any specific clues.

“The possibilities are so wide and variable,” he said. “Someone intentionally did it, but we don’t know who and why.”

The pastor declined to speculate whether the fire was politically based or directed at Palin, a Republican who ran unsuccessfully as John McCain’s vice presidential running mate. Kroon also declined to say whether the church has received any recent threats.

Kroon was at home when he got a call from the husband of one of the women who had been in the building. By the time he arrived, smoke was pouring from the windows of a back corner of the building.

The building is equipped with a fire sprinkler system, Kroon said, but the fire was burning in the walls and took hours to put out.

Most of the damage was confined to the back corner of the building where four offices and a classroom are located, he said. There is also water damage and the entire building smells like smoke, he said.

Steele, the fire chief, said nothing has been found thus far to suggest any political motivation for the fire.

“Right now there’s no indication that we have that there’s any connection there. We just don’t have any leads at all as far as the intent or motive in this,” Steele said.
